The Sandwich Swap

Submitted by Ms. Tess!
The Sandwich Swap by Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah and Kelly DiPucchio, with illustrations by Tricia Tusa, is a wonderful story for young people about inter-cultural appreciation. Salma and Lily are best friends! They play together, and draw together, and eat lunch together every day. BUT every day for lunch, Salma eats a pita and hummus sandwich, and Lily thinks it looks disgusting! And every day Lily eats a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and Salma thinks it looks revolting! Honestly the two friends each feel bad for the other one that they have to eat such an icky lunch! One day the truth comes out. Lily tells Salma her sandwich looks yucky! And Salma tells Lily her sandwich smells gross! There are hurt feelings on both sides of the lunch table. The hurling of sandwich insults eventually turns into an actual hurling of sandwiches in a cafeteria-wide food fight! The two friends are really ashamed of themselves. The next day, they decide to try each others' sandwiches and Lily discovers hummus and pita tastes divine! And Salma realizes that peanut butter and jelly can be scrumptious! And the girls have a fabulous idea for a school event celebrating food from around the world! This book shows how important it is to not jump to conclusions, and judge anyone based on their culture. Someone might look different, or speak different, or eat a different sandwich than you, but that doesn't mean they can't be an amazing friend! See this book listed in our catlog
